Ilford RecorderSports club aims to be a big hitter
Ilford Recorder 27th November 2008

A HIDDEN gem is ready to take on its role as a shining light in Ilford's social scene.

A hefty injection of cash and hard work is set to transform Ilford Sports Club, Cricklefiled Stadium, High Road, Ilford, into a thriving community centre.

Now boss Terry Austen hopes to turn around the club's ailing fortunes after years of financial suffering.

He said: "The main problem is not many people know we are here - as the club is so far back from the main road - and others just connect us with sport and football.

"We are facing a biog challenge to make this work, but this is not just a job, it is a way of life and we are up for the challenge."

Redbridge Council proposals to build a new school academy close by could help generate more business for the club after originally threatening its existance as it was thought the club would have to be demolished.

Tomorrow (Friday) is the launch of live music Fridays when R&B outfit the Blue Hearts play followed in coming weeks by karaoke and more bands.

The function halls are used for salsa and karate lessons, and social event bookings are on the rise.

COMMUNITY CLUB: Terry Austen at Ilford Sports ClubMr Austen said: "We don't really expect to take a huge lunchtime pint trade, but we have worked to ensure that our prices are always lower than pubs."

"Also, the place doesn't feel like a pub or a working men's club. It's a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where people can chat to you."

The club has played host to meetings between top council and health authority bosses, while up and coming bands have plugged into the Leg Up rehersal room sessions.

"We're trying something a little bit different," said Mr Austen. Something that is for the whole of the borough.
